BANNED ITEMS: No matter what project you may consider for support, there are certain items that are never allowed into any correctional setting! Do not include any items that contain any metal or glass. And no hygiene items that contain alcohol in the ingredients list (ie some lotions, mouthwash, etc). No matter how miniscule the alcohol content may be, if it is listed in the ingredients, it is not allowed. Many facilities also ban hard back books. So please check with us before you send.

At Christmas we sponsor a Christmas party for the juvenile offenders. Each one gets a sweatshirt, 1 pr of socks, hygiene, stationary, candy, and a book or a Bible. All items included in their care packages must be identical.
Indiana Women's Prison Indianapolis, Indiana
Family Preservation Program: The women in this program must complete an extensive parenting class. Once that task in completed, their children may be dropped off at the prison to visit up to 4 hours a month with their mother in the Family Preservation Center. The FPC is an area that is much more relaxed than the regular visiting room. There are couches and tables; video and board games, books and puzzles, as well as snacks. It is a much more relaxed atmosphere for moms to interact with their children.
On going needs include donations of: board games, children's books, puzzles, snack items.
Wee Ones Unit: This is an innovative program in the state of Indiana. If a woman is pregnant upon her arrest, will deliver her baby while incarcerated, and sentenced to less than 18 months for a non-violent offense (along with some other criteria), she may be eligible for this program that allows her to keep her baby with her throughout her incarceration. This unit is fenced off from the regular prison population and may house up to 10 moms with their babies.
On going needs include: diapers, wipes, and all things "baby", including clothes, toys, blankets, towels and washcloths, hygiene, etc.
Mosquito Nets: This project began as a college class project. The women make mosquito nets and send them to foreign countries where mosquito born illnesses are prevalent. Their nets are larger than most nets made available in these much needed areas of the world. One net can cover a mother and a couple of small children. This particular project requires financial donations made to purchase the netting and batting to construct the nets. The company from which the materials are purchased have arrangements with the prison, to which a donor may make a contribution to their account, and then the company will send the purchased materials to the prison. So you know exactly where your money went. If you are interested in supporting this project, contact Lynn for further information.
Community Service Projects: As a part of a typical prison sentence, many inmates have some community service tacked onto their sentence. At the women's prison, they have an entire arts and crafts area dedicated to projects for this purpose. They make quilts for homeless people. They knit afghans, hats, mittens, and scraves for the homeless and for Life Centers and Children's homes. The largest project for which they served was when the NFL's Super Bowl was in Indianapolis. The city mobilized an army of volunteers to assist in pulling off the festivities. Each volunteer received a hand knitted scarf with the Super Bowl Logo sewn onto it. Most of the scarves were made by these women and all others came thru the women's prison, as well, to have to logo sewn on. There are a host of other crafts they are involved in, as well.
On going needs include: Materials for quilting, yarn for knitting, plastic knitting needles
